Running Injuries

Running Injuries

Running is one of the most popular sports. You don’t need special equipment to enjoy the cardiovascular benefits of running—which is why so many people go for a daily jog to manage their weight, build endurance and clear their mind. While running is a powerful workout, it also comes with certain risks. After all, running requires full-body strength, which can strain your body over time.

There are several common running injuries that people of any age can develop if they don’t take the necessary precautions to protect themselves while on a run. Our sports rehabilitation doctors at Physicians Plus prevent, diagnose and treat running injuries in our patients. We can help you achieve a pain-free life through our innovative treatments.

Common Running Injuries

Running can put the body under significant stress. While runners are bound to face minor aches and pains at some point, severe injuries can leave you unable to function like you used to. No runner wants to miss out on a favorite pastime because of a sore knee or tender hamstring, but if you suspect you are injured, you need to step back and treat the condition before it worsens.

Runners should take care to avoid the following common injuries:
  • Runner’s Knee: Runner’s knee, also known as patellofemoral syndrome, is caused by overuse. There are several causes of runner’s knee, and it tends to happen when the kneecap isn’t aligned properly. As time passes, the knee’s cartilage gets worn down, causing pain when bending your leg, climbing stairs or squatting.
  • Stress Fractures: You can develop stress fractures if you do strenuous exercise before your body gets accustomed. These are tiny cracks in the bones that make up the shin and feet.
  • Pulled Muscles: When you overstretch a muscle, the tissues develop small tears that cause soreness. Runners commonly pull their hamstrings, calves and quadriceps.
  • Ankle Sprain: A sprained ankle usually happens if the foot twists abnormally or rolls in an inward direction while running. The ligaments get stretched and torn.
  • Plantar Fasciitis: This condition happens when the plantar fascia, the band of tissues extending from the toes to the heel, becomes inflamed. Runners who have tight calf muscles or a high arch are at a higher risk for this condition.

Since symptoms can be similar across different kinds of injuries, it’s important to have a chiropractor perform a physical evaluation to determine the root cause.
