Dry Needling

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a manipulative procedure that is meant to reduce tension in commonly tight areas of myofascial tissues which are bundles of tissues that separate individual layers of muscle. When these tighten, they can cause both direct and referred pain. These tight areas are commonly referred to as trigger points. Dry needling can help reduce this myofascial pain by inserting thin needles into the trigger point to stimulate the muscle. These needles are not the same type of needles used in vaccinations, as they are solid rather than hollow and don’t inject any substances into the body.

These needles are placed strategically in safe locations by professionals trained to do so. Depending on the location of your pain and the type of pain you are experiencing, needles are inserted at different depths for varying periods of time. This could be anywhere between a few seconds to 15 minutes total. When they are inserted into the myofascial tissue, you may experience a muscle twitch, ache, or soreness which comes from how dry needling helps rewire the ways that your body feels pain. The puncture is meant to release tension in the muscles to help reduce trigger point areas.

Dry Needling Technique

Experiencing joint and muscle pain can put a damper on your daily life. When seeking out ways to minimize this pain outside of traditional medicine, consider dry needling. The process of dry needling is a relatively up-and-coming technique that is growing in popularity for treating a variety of conditions. It is meant to treat myofascial pain that can cause irritation with touch or motion. Before scheduling an appointment for a dry needling procedure, it’s best to understand what the process entails and the potential benefits that it may offer you.

Benefits of Dry Needling

There are many benefits associated with dry needling, especially when paired with exercise and other forms of physical therapy. Some of the most commonly seen positives about dry needling include pain reduction, the treatment of both muscular and neuro-musculoskeletal injuries, an increase in mobility, decrease inflammation, and the facilitation of muscle repair. This occurs due to vasodilation facilitated by the needle placement that leads to increased blood flow, and thus greater oxygen supply, to trigger areas. With less pain and improved blood flow comes a decreased need for pain medication which may lead to additional benefits down the line.

Dry Needling vs Acupuncture

Some people may believe that dry needling and acupuncture are identical procedures that yield the same result for the body. However, despite the similarity between the needles used for both procedures, they are more unalike than they are comparable. While acupuncture is based on the idea of balance and flow in the body, dry needling is used to treat acute and chronic pain.
